Employee Health and Fitness Month

It's Time to Make Healthy the Norm for Employees

Employers and employees everywhere can show their support for healthy living by participating in the National Association for Health & Fitness and ACTIVE Life's first-ever "Employee Health & Fitness Month" (EHFM) during May 2nd through the 31st. NAHF Executive Director, Phil Haberstro stated "We (NAHF) previously held 'Employee Health & Fitness Day' on the third Wednesday of the month of May. Employers wanted to have more flexibility in choosing when and how to celebrate, and in some cases invite employers from around the world." Employee Health & Fitness Month has been extended to a month-long initiative in an effort to generate sustainability for a healthy lifestyle and initiate healthy activities on an ongoing basis.

"The amazing strategic partnership between NAHF and ACTIVE Life resulting in the new and improved Employee Health & Fitness Month is truly historic in the arena of workplace wellness. Business and industry can encourage positive behavior change in the supportive context of workplace policies and culture and provide support that assists today's workforce with their daily struggles. Through EHFM we will achieve the optimum result of a more physically active and healthier population... one healthy moment and one healthy group at a time," said Diane Hart, president of NAHF.

All you have to do is create and share "Moments, Groups and Projects for Health" - such as, preparing a healthy meal, organizing a recurring walk or bike ride with colleagues or participating in a clean-up day in your community. EHFM will kick-off with ACTIVE Life's Demand Healthy Week in which everyone will create Healthy Moments and Groups, not just employers, during the first week of May. Employers will challenge their employees to continue to do so throughout the month, concluding the month with a culminating Project. Baker Harrell, CEO of ACTIVE Life said "ACTIVE Life is honored to be partnering with the NAHF on this game-changing initiative. It is time to make healthy the norm in America and we believe Demand Healthy Week and EHFM are powerful efforts toward the realization of this goal."

Since the founding of the Employee Health & Fitness celebration in May of 1989 there have been significant strides in documenting the evidence of the value of investing in employee health as a powerful strategic component of an organization's human capital management. Progressive employers understand that an investment in their employee's health is essential to managing health costs, improving organizational productivity and employee morale. Brenda Loube, EHFM Chair and NAHF Board member, said "As a long time advocate of healthy, active living I am excited to be leading the way for the Employee Health & Fitness Month. We hope this event plants a seed that the small choices you make each day can have a big impact on long term health. Decide to move, eat right and live well today and encourage others around you at work to do the same."

It's easy and simple to show your support for a healthy, active workplace. During the first week of May, every participating organization will create a Healthy Moment to go for a lunchtime walk, and get as many employees as possible to participate.
