About The Gold Star Awards

The first Gold Star Awards Program took place at the National Conference in Denver, Colorado March 4-7, 1998 (then known as National Association of Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports or NAGCPFS). During the years 1998 and 1999 there was only two awards-State Council of the Year and State Council Member or Volunteer of the Year. The first National Conference was held in Washington DC in the spring of 1979. There were 25 member states in 1979.

Award Categories:
NAHF Member of the Year
This award goes to an NAHF member who has made outstanding contributions in the field of health, fitness or sports in their state and has helped NAHF to become a strong national leader in the field of Health, Fitness and Sports . Leadership, new program development, financial or funding achievements, legislative advancements, are a few of the areas this candidate might have excelled in.

NAHF State Council of the Year Award
This award goes to the NAHF State Council based on their contributions to NAHF and or advancements in health, fitness and sports in their state or in the country. Program development, financial and fundraising achievements, legislative advancements, health and fitness promotions are examples of some of the areas a council can be chosen from.

NAHF National Exemplary Health and Fitness Leadership Award
This NAHF award recognizes national organizations or companies who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the field of health, fitness and sports or the development of national programs that serve as a model for others to follow. As a major national health and fitness organization NAHF is proud to recognize major organizations and companies who not only serve as models for others to follow, but also represent outstanding achievements within their organization and across the country. This award category that allows NAHF recognize other national leaders who are helping to make America a healthier and more active country to live in.

The Glenn Swengros Award
This award is given in honor of Glenn Swengros who, as a founding member of NAHF, set high standards for what true leadership is all about. The award is a special leadership award given to individuals who have shown outstanding leadership in the field of health, fitness or sports.
